• The Mumbai MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act) court has rejected the bail application of Salim Qureshi, also known as "Papa Pathan," who is a close aide of Chhota Shakeel, a senior member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang. The court cited the serious nature of the charges against Pathan, including his alleged involvement in extortion and other criminal activities, as the reason for denying him bail.
• Pathan was arrested in 2021 by the Mumbai Police's Anti-Extortion Cell for his alleged involvement in extorting money from a builder in the city. The police also claimed that Pathan was in regular contact with Chhota Shakeel, who is based in Pakistan, and was involved in the gang's criminal activities in Mumbai.
• The MCOCA court, in its order, stated that Pathan's release on bail could hamper the ongoing investigation and that there was a high risk of him tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses if he was granted bail. The court also noted that Pathan's criminal record, which includes several cases under the MCOCA, was a significant factor in the decision to deny him bail.
