The City of Helsinki on Thursday said its trial supplying free period products at schools had been a success.A survey following the conclusion of the trial revealed that some Helsinki students suffer from period poverty, according to the city. The pupils and educational institutions involved reported that the trial normalised menstruation and encouraged debate around the topic of period poverty, a lack of access to menstrual products. The trial was carried out in grades 6-9 at Hiidenkivi primary school, Sibelius high school, Tölö Gymnasium as well as at a unit of Stadin ammattiopisto, a vocational college. The pilot was the result of a city council initiative seeking to combat period poverty by granting those with limited resources access to free period products."
