Young Sydney family sleeping at Taronga Zoo told to leave belongings and run to safety as five lions escaped enclosure

TL;DR

A young family who was spending the night at Taronga Zoo were told by zookeepers to leave their belongings behind as they were rushed to safety when a loud alarm sounded to warn five lions had escaped their exhibits.Local couple Magnus and Dominque Perri were staying inside tents for the Roar and Snore experience with their young sons Lucas, six, and Oliver, eight, and were woken up by the roaring of the lions at about 4am just hours before the predators broke free.Roar and Snore is a luxury camping experience where visitors sleep over at the zoo and have a chance to see different species late at night and early in the morning, with the animal sounds being a key part of the experience.“We had our vets there who had the tranquilliser gun so they could safely do that and the decision was made to safely tranquillize her to ensure that she also went back into the exhibit,” he told reporters in a press conference. The lions will not be able to enter the section of the enclosure where the escape happened until zookeepers complete an investigation of the incident and the exhibit fence to ensure it is “100 per cent safe”."
